The Dutch government released an advisory to its citizens about getting a “sex buddy” during the Covid-19 lockdown. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has since revised their advice, but they still have a page titled ‘Coronavirus and Sexuality‘ on their website. Under the first advice point about the 1.5 meter rule, they link to a Q&A on sex and the coronavirus from Soa Aids Nederland which includes a list of ‘What Kind of Sex can you have safely.’ The article states that the lowest percentage of catching coronavirus during sex is by staying 1.5 meters, or at least two arms lengths away from each other, while having sex. Their list includes:
- Masturbate: sex with yourself
- Masturbate with another. Keep at least 1.5 meters away.
- Sexting or telephone sex via, for example, apps, videos or audio (but never send photos or videos to others without permission)
- Sexting with a group via for example Skype, Zoom or Teams
- Watch porn
- Read erotic books or magazines
- Create erotic podcasts
- Webcam sex
- 1 on 1 masturbation show
- Striptease
- Sex with a vibrator that you control remotely
I’d like to point out that sex from 1.5 meters away from one another isn’t sex. These actions listed above are all ways of masturbating, or acts of touching oneself for sexual pleasure, with the source of stimulant being anything other than a physical intertwining with another human body. It ought to be self-evident, but when a government comes out and lists ways to have sex through a government subsidizes source, and the list doesn’t actually include sex, then something must be said.
We are so far from the original definition and purpose of sex God gave us to be in the confines of holy matrimony. Our culture has so degenerated, twisted, and inverted the topic of sex. For lack of time and space I’ll simply say this: sex was created for reproduction and God gave physical and spiritual properties of bonding and pleasure. The pleasure factor of sex is a gift of God, but since the sexual revolution of the 1960’s the globe has collectively looked at sex as an act primarily for pleasure, and the live-giving properties are a secondary and often unwanted byproduct.
This idea of sex is what the Catholic Church had in mind when Pope Paul VI released his encyclical Humanae Vitae in 1968 calling birth control intrinsically wrong. It seemed archaic, but now decades later, we can see the slippery slope society has fallen-down. Does masturbation provide an alternative to physical intercourse? Of course, but by definition, it is not sex, and it is irresponsible for a government to conflate the two. Especially in a time where people are afraid to even breathe the outside air, and they’re looking to the leaders of our countries for sound instruction.
An argument for having websites on sexual education that are subsidized by the government like Soa Aids in the Netherlands, and Planned Parenthood in the United States is that kids sometimes grow up in homes where they are too uncomfortable or are unable to go to their parents or guardian to discuss sex. In these cases the children need a guiding hand to lead a sexually healthy life. If this is so, then these websites need to be called out for their mistakes.
The issue isn’t telling people to stay away from one another when they’re sick, which includes times when people want to have sex, it’s the way that media, governments, and culture are perfectly comfortable with conflating sex with any act or any stimulant that brings sexual pleasure. Teaching masturbation and pornography to young adults and children, as some state governments attempt to do, is an outshoot of that conflation, and is indeed also a problem.
As we are ushered into an era of Transhumanism, it cannot be stated enough that physical sex cannot be replaced by technology, toys, or any mediums that aren’t human. Screens cannot 1 for 1 replace touch, whether it’s porn or your spouse on the other side of the screen. I’m sure soon we’ll be having discussions to decide whether it’s still considered sex if one is hooked up to a haptic suit and watching pornography with a VR headset. If you ask the Dutch government, I’m sure they’ll say it is. I’ll be back with another article when it happens, and the answer of course, is no.
